Wonders of the Mekong in the media
The Wonders of the Mekong project has generated extraordinary media coverage, setting it apart from any other conservation initiative. With more than 30 articles and video stories featured in National Geographic alone, the project's impact has been truly global. The 2022 discovery of the giant freshwater stingray in Cambodia—later confirmed by Guinness World Records as the world's largest freshwater fish—captured headlines worldwide, with stories reaching an audience of over one billion people. Other stories and reports produced by the project have similarly reached audiences of hundreds of millions of people globally.
In addition to its international reach, the project has achieved significant local and regional media coverage, which has played a critical role in influencing policymaking in the region. According to a media metrics analysis by the University of Nevada, Reno, the project’s media coverage has generated more than $5 million in publicity value, highlighting its exceptional success in raising global and regional awareness about Mekong River conservation.
