Why the Lower Mekong River Basin?

The Mekong, a biodiversity hotspot and the world’s most productive river, supports over 70 million people. From the tributary headwaters to Vietnam’s fertile delta and “rice bowl,” the river sustains nearly 1,000 freshwater fish species, rare and endangered wildlife, floodplains, and forests that sustain local communities. Ancient civilizations, such as Angkor Wat, thrived on its bounty.

Today, the river supports a fishery valued between $5.6 and $9.4 billion annually, with ecosystem services worth hundreds of billions of dollars supporting cities, agriculture, aquaculture, and hydropower. Despite its richness, the Mekong faces mounting challenges from population growth and regional development.
